Enterprise Class Dinghies

The Enterprise dinghy is a two-person, non-trapeze, non-spinnaker, one design, double chine hull dinghy.

Designed by Jack Holt in 1956, the Enterprise design has withstood the test of time, and the class provides some of the best sailing and racing to be found anywhere. Over 23,000 are registered worldwide. It has excellent qualities both as a cruising and two-person racing boat which can also be sailed singlehanded. The Enterprise dinghy is also very stable and can be sailed offshore with confidence.

It is a well-established class which means that good class racing, and open meeting racing is readily available all over the country, including approximately 10 annual events in the local Thames Valley area.

Enterprises have been constructed using a variety of materials. A large proportion of later boats are glass fibre (FRP), and some have a new style of interior layout. Alternatives are the composite boat for those who like wooden decks without the fuss of maintaining a wooden hull. You can also obtain a conventional all-wooden boat from one of the specialist builders.

Secondhand Enterprise dinghies can be purchased for a couple of hundred pounds and competitive boats can easily be found between £500 – £1500. Wooden boats tend to be cheaper as they can require more maintenance.

At Chipstead Enterprises are sailed by female and male helms and crews of various ages.

The class has a points series that runs on Sunday afternoons in the summer season and can also be sailed in the various handicap races during other club racing sessions.
