About Us

The Radio Sailing section was formed as part of Chipstead SC in February 2015 with an initial membership of approximately 15 members of whom many transferred from Swanley Radio Sailing Club which was closing because of a silted-up lake.

Since 2015 the number of members has increased to 30. Chipstead SC Radio Sailing is a member of the Model Yachting Association (MYA) of the UK, the governing body for all radio sailing within the United Kingdom. Within our members we have some very good sailors who race in UK Open events.

We sail 2 types of model yachts, International One Design (I.O.M.) and the Dragon flite 95 (DF95). Details of these two yachts are on the page under their type names.

Our club racing programme consists of Mondays at 10.00 a.m. for DF95s, Wednesdays at 10.00 a.m. for IOMs. and Fridays at 11.00 a.m., an open class day with all classes of yachts welcome to come along and either race informally or use as a tune up day. On Fridays there is a break for lunch with the session concluding at 14.00 p.m.

We sail all year round (weather permitting) and have 4 different series for each class: Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. Throughout the year we also run Open meetings when sailors from all over the UK compete for trophies and a position in their area and UK class rankings. In addition, we have club trophy races which include the Garven McKie Trophy, Bullard Trophy, Peter Curl Trophy, Past Friends Handicap Trophy, William Grant Trophy plus a trophy for the most improved sailor in each fleet.

All racing is conducted under the Racing Rules of Sailing which apply to all sailboats of all sizes. Copies of these rules can be obtained from the MYA or are available online.

Radio Sailing Membership

£71 / year payable to Chipstead Sailing Club (see “About”, “Membership&Fees” on the “Home” page.)

Plus £25 payable to Chipstead SC Radio Sailing of which £15 / year is for Chipstead SC Radio Sailing section and £10 / year is for passing onto the MYA for their affiliation fee. Alternatively, this MYA fee can be paid with the membership of another Radio Sailing Club affiliated to the MYA.
