International One Metre (IOM) Radio Yachts
The IOM is a popular class which is sailed at many clubs in the UK and around the world. It is one metre in length, has 3 sets of sails and weighs a minimum of 4 kilos. They can vary in price from about £250 for older boats to more than £1800 for newer boats. We have about 19 yachts in the club.
The IOM class rules specify a standard sail plan and control of other dimensions for displacement, length and draft while allowing freedom in hull design. The IOM is now the largest and arguably the most competitive of all radio sailing classes. The rules whilst limiting rigging, hull, materials used in construction and size of sails, give an equal chance to everyone to win.
IOM yachts must have a measurement certificate which is obtained from an official measurer of the MYA. (We have a member who is an official measurer.) It is advisable to have this certification for your yacht before racing at all levels.
Whilst some of our experienced skippers are within the UK ranking system, novices are always welcome and will receive help and advice on rigging, tuning and sailing from the more seasoned skippers.
If you are interested in having a GO, please come along to the lake at Chipstead SC any Wednesday or Friday and a member will let you have a go with his yacht.
